DEFINITION
Suspense Account
A suspense account temporarily holds transactions that cannot yet be classified to their final account. Balances are expected to clear quickly; balances that accumulate across periods indicate a reconciliation breakdown.
Persistent suspense balances matter for two reasons. They misstate the accounts they should have reached, and they provide a location where misposted or misappropriated amounts can sit without attracting attention.
Analytics test the ageing of suspense, clearing, and inter-company balances, and identify items that remain unresolved beyond policy or that clear and immediately re-accumulate.
